Chat Room Upgraded
Today, I upgraded our chat room from "Advanced" to "Professional". Although you may not be able to benefit from the new features right now, the new chat room will allow us several great features in the near future. I'll discuss those in a later post. Anyway, when I upgraded the package, so did the cost of the chat room. The chat room will now cost $15.95 a month, up from $6.95 of the old chat room. So I was wondering if anyone would be able to help support the chat, if I could get like 3 people to give $5 a month that would be great. I will put your name on the chat room so people know you support it. Thanks. E-mail me with any questions, pip@carly-patterson.net.

Also, I'll be in the chat room on and off today, so stop by and see if I'm there.

Carly Visits Gym (Video)
Yesterday, Carly visited a gym in Tampa Bay. A news reporter was there and reported on Carly and also about the young gymnasts there. I was able to take the video from the TV station web site and convert it to MPEG format so you can download it. It's a pretty good clip.

New Article, New Pictures
I have an article and two new pictures. First, I'll start with the new pictures. They are off of Dominique Moceanu's web site. They are from the 9th annual International Gymnastics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The pictures aren't the best quality, but better then nothing.

Secondly, a new article was posted today on Tampa Bay sports web site. A pretty good article. I've posted it below but first, the picture from the article, and also I flipped the picture so you can see Carly's face. :)

My version:

A Golden Age

By ERIK ERLENDSSON eerlendsson@tampatrib.com
Published: May 25, 2005

TAMPA - Carly Patterson is living the life of a Gymnastic Idol. One day she hopes to be an American Idol.

The 2004 Olympics women's gymnastics all-around gold medalist possesses more than just a package of tumbles, flips and dismounts. Patterson also packs a pretty potent singing voice and is hoping that one day it will lead to a career in the music industry.

``My dad used to be a singer [and] me and my sister both, we've always been [singing] since we were little,'' Patterson said. ``I'm working on that right now. I've recorded a couple of things, so we'll see how that goes.''

In the meantime, the soon- to-be high school senior from Allen, Texas, is continuing to adapt to her role as America's Golden Girl after becoming the second U.S. gymnast to capture the women's all-around gold, joining Mary Lou Retton, who won gold in Los Angeles in 1984.

After scoring a 9.712 on the floor exercise in her final all- around event at the 2004 Olympics in Athens to clinch the gold, Patterson has been on an almost nonstop schedule. She has made the talk- show circuit, including ``The Tonight Show'' and ``The Late Show with David Letterman.'' The 17-year-old was the subject of an NBC special and adorned the front of a Wheaties box. She landed national endorsement deals with McDonald's, AT&T and Visa.

Another of her endorsements, with Tyson chicken, landed her at Stars Athletics gym in South Tampa on Tuesday. Stars earned the privilege of entertaining Patterson - who was joined by 1996 U.S. Olympic gymnast John Macready - after winning a drawing that included 1,900 other gyms from around the U.S.

Adapting to the whirlwind tour hasn't been the easiest thing for Patterson, who trains in the gym an average of 35 hours a week. Between her training schedule, school and cross-country travel, she finds precious few moments to be at home, let alone relax and catch her breath.

``Some weekends I'm home and I really cherish my time at home now and I've learned to just chill,'' Patterson said. ``Training I'm used to. It's hard, but you get used to it after doing it for so long. Now, I'm always flying and sleeping in other hotel rooms, and you have to wake up early. Then you meet a ton of people and you have to be smiley and happy.

``It's tiring in a different way.''

Even without all the travel, Patterson's training schedule has been slowed somewhat since returning from Greece.

After a recent visit to the doctor she was told she has bulging discs in her back - an injury she felt in Athens that required pain killers to subside - and needs rest to allow them to heal. The training regiment has been reduced to light work with soft landings, not the rough-and-tumble routines that made her a Golden Girl.

``I just try to keep it to a minimum when I'm in the gym, try to take it easy because [the doctor] said, `You don't want to have problems when you are 30, you need to make sure your back is healed properly,' '' she said.

The next major international meet is the World Gymnastics Championships scheduled for Nov. 21-27 in Melbourne, Australia - though Patterson is not sure if she will be able to represent her country because of the injury.

``I haven't really decided yet,'' she said. ``I'm just going to try to see when this [injury] is going to settle down a little bit and see how I feel.''

Patterson's passion for the sport hasn't subsided at all.

``It's what I really love doing,'' said Patterson, who plans to study dental hygiene in college. ``I definitely want to always be involved in the sport. I get to coach my gym's summer camp. I get to coach some of it in the last week of June, so I'm really excited to help out and try to teach people.''

CPnet Member Chats with Carly
While, as I wrote in the last couple of posts. Carly was in Indy last weekend (May 6-7) and in the last post you'll see some pictures from DeVeau's Gymnastics School in Fishers, Indiana. Well, it just so happens one of our forum members was also there last weekend. I've posted his account of what happened and what him and Carly talked about. Wish I could talk to Carly. :)

Eric and Carly (see last post for more pictures from event)

"I met Carly at about 3 pm at DeVeau's gym in Indy. I dropped my little sister off to train and then stayed the afternoon so I could get Carly's autograph for my sister. It turned out we ended up talking for about 5 minutes or so and I ended up getting pictures taken with her-haha. Anyway, she was at Deveau's from 3 to 5 pm, where she then had to leave promptly to go to Indianapolis Int'l Airport where she flew back home to Dallas. Her mom and sister were not with her at the gym. She was so nice to all the little girls there getting her autograph, stopping to take pictures and carry on quick conversations with each.

When I talked to her she seemed super tired. She told me she had to get up at 4:20 that morning to promote for the Visa Championships that are coming to Indy later this summer. She was also clearly taller. I would say at least 5' 4", if not 5' 5". She hasn't gained much weight, if any. I didn't think she looked any bigger at all, just taller. I asked her how her own training was going and how her back was doing. She said she wishes she could have some more time in the gym, but is always traveling places. She did say thought that being gone more did help her back because she wasn't pushing how much she could do during workouts. She talked like she really enjoyed going to the Indianapolis track and opening the festivities. She also mentioned that her life was hectic, but she was still thankful and grateful. The amazing thing about her was how humble she was. She was more interested in knowing about me, than talking about herself. Every person out there who views Carly as a role model has picked an absolutley amazing person to be just that. She is so hard working and down to earth. She is truely an inspiration to all."

Pictures from Gym Visit
As I told you on Monday, Carly visited a local gym in Indy. That gym was DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics in Fishers, Indiana. They got to meet Carly because they sold the most All-Session tickets to the Visa Championships. Also, Carly was on the cover of a local Indy newspaper and did several interviews. USA Gymnastics posted some pictures from the Gym visit. They are posted below. They are a little small but better then nothing.

Anyone live in Johnston, Iowa?
I just happened to stumble across an upcoming Carly appearance. Although, I don't think many will be able to go. Never-the-less, Carly will be at Junior Golf Clinic in Johnston, Iowa. All you have to do is bring your clubs, and you get a bunch of free stuff and of course get to see Carly. It's free and you don't have to call ahead. So anyway, if you can make it. Contact me. For more information, see http://www.hy-vee.com/juniorgolfclinic.pdf and http://www.hy-vee.com/default.asp?p=hyveeclassichome.

Anyway, to make sure this is actually newsworthy. Here's some media I've uploaded to my server. Not a whole lot, but hopefully more will be coming soon.

New Carly Article
Yet more Carly news from Indy. This time it's an article on IndyStar.com. I'll simply post it below. Also remember the pictures taken yesterday at the practice laps for the Indy 500 below this post.

Busy schedule still routine for Olympian
By David Woods

You could impress friends with a correct reply to this question.

Question: Will gymnast Carly Patterson make it to China?

Answer: She has already been there.

Patterson, 17, recently traveled to China as a guest of organizers who assembled top international athletes. It was just one more weekend of a post-Olympic blur.

But Patterson can't tell you what she might be doing when the 2008 Beijing Olympics open. Maybe attending college. Maybe recording pop songs. Maybe going for another all-around gold medal.

"I haven't really thought about that yet," she said. "I've been so busy doing all the stuff from the last Olympics.

"I guess it could happen. I'll just have to see how everything keeps going and how I feel."

Patterson is in Indianapolis to promote August's U.S. Gymnastics Championships, set for Conseco Fieldhouse. She was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday to wave the green flag, signaling the opening of the track.

Patterson would not rule out competing in the nationals, although she acknowledged she hasn't trained seriously. She said a doctor told her to rest so that fractured vertebrae and herniated disks could heal.

On the days she has been in the gym, she has adjusted to new dimensions. She said she is about 5-1, or nearly three inches taller than at the Athens Olympics.

If she doesn't compete, Patterson said, she would attend the nationals anyway to publicize the event. She trains in the same Texas gym as the sport's rising star, Nastia Liukin, 15. Liukin won the U.S. junior title in 2004, just as Patterson did two years earlier.

Although monomaniacal devotion might have allowed Patterson to win three medals at Athens, she does have other interests. She is pursuing them as vigorously as sponsors are pursuing her.

"I think this is just a result and payoff for all her hard work," said her mother, Natalie, who accompanies Carly on most trips. "It's kind of a fun time afterward to be able to enjoy all these great opportunities."

Patterson's agent is seeking a writer to help the gymnast with an autobiography. Next on her schedule is a photo shoot for a signature line of GK leotards.

Patterson said in an October interview with USA Today that she wants to be a pop singer like Hilary Duff. The gymnast recently recorded a song, "Damaged," and told Inside Gymnastics magazine that singing is her new passion.

So it's no surprise that her favorite post-Olympic engagement was not the one in which she saw the Great Wall of China. It was "MTV's Video Music Awards." There she met artists such as Nick Lachey, JoJo, Ashanti, Ashlee Simpson and Ryan Cabrera.

If hanging out with music stars sounds like every teenager's dream, let it be known one of Patterson's goals is downright ordinary: To graduate from a public high school.

For two years, she has attended Spring Creek Academy in Plano, Texas, which accommodates aspiring Olympians and performers. She wants to spend senior year at Allen High School in Allen, Texas, which lists an enrollment of 2,609 for grades 10-12.

Patterson's schedule was so crowded after the Olympics that she didn't attend classes at all during the first semester at the academy.

"A lot of the seniors their senior year, they don't even go a full day of school," she said. "But I think I'm going to go a full day of school next year just to get everything in."

In Patterson's post-Olympic lifestyle, more than a year will be required to get everything in.
