Carly Aiming for Beijing???
A small mention in an article about the 2007 Nationals leads readers to believe that Carly might be going for the 2008 Olympics. The comment comes from USA Gymnastics President Steve Penny. "...two or three members of the '04 Olympics team could end up in San Jose, suggesting that both Courtney Kupets and Carly Patterson might end up aiming for Beijing", Steve Penny told Mercury News. Most people thought Carly was done with gymnastics, could this be a sign she's not? On a side note, the 2006 Nationals will be right here in Minnesota. The 2007 Nationals, the event the article was referring to, will be held in San Jose, California.

ESPY Photos
Carly did not win the ESPY on Wednesday but she still went. I don't have any pictures of her at the ESPYs but I was able to find some pictures of her getting ready. These pictures were taken at The Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood. Carly looks different for some reason, maybe it's just me. Also, sorry for the fairly big tags but I actually bought these photos.

There's a few new pictures from the WOGA Banquet at http://www.allison-taylor.com/05_banquet.htm Worth checking out.

New Carly Article
A new Carly article has come out. It talks about her visit to Flip Fest, being a role model, and hints about an album next year. Also, the ESPYs are tomorrow. Carly is up for one. If she wins, she will be on ESPN Sunday Night.

"Patterson fulfills her role as role model"
Olympic champion visits area gymnasts

After Carly Patterson became the Olympic all-around gymnastics champion last summer in Athens, her life changed forever.

Award nominations, talk show appearances, speaking engagements and numerous gymnastic camp appearances have become a way of life for the 17-year-old from Allen, Texas.

So it was nothing new for Patterson when she was bombarded with hugs, waves and high-fives from more than 200 kids Friday when she appeared at John and John's Flip Fest at Premier Gymnastics and Tumbling. It reminded her of when she was a fan, instead of the one fans came to see.

"I remember when I was at camps and I got to see my favorite gymnast that I looked up to," Carly said. "(Former Olympic gold medalist) Shannon (Miller) and the 1996 Olympic team were the whole reason I wanted to go the Olympics."

Patterson was the first Olympic all-around champion from the United States since Mary Lou Retton in 1984. In 2003, she was the first American woman to medal in the all-around of the World Championships since 1994 when Miller accomplished that feat.

With Miller standing only a few feet away Friday, the torch seemingly has been passed to Patterson as the face of gymnastics in the U.S. and around the world. Patterson accepts that and even at such a young age, she's ready to take on the title of "role model."

"It feels good that I'm looked up to," Patterson said. "I feel like I set a good example and I feel like I do.

"I just try and be myself and help them with whatever they need and answer their questions."

When Patterson's not attending camps and making appearances, she likes to spend time at home and with friends. Aside from gymnastics, she loves to sing and she is pursuing a pop-rock singing career with hopes of releasing an album next year. Prior to her coming to Knoxville, she was able to spend a couple of weeks at home. Constantly on the road, Patterson will take any break she can.

"That was actually really nice for me," Patterson said. "Two weeks is a long time for me, I can't tell you how long I haven't had two weeks at home."

Patterson is not sure whether she'll defend her title in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. While she still is training and has awhile to make her decision, Patterson admits that she feels like she's accomplished her goal in gymnastics.

She has enjoyed the ride to the top, and that is a big part of her message to fans.

"Just get into whatever sport you love and are passionate about and just have fun," Patterson said. "Don't take it too seriously, just enjoy what you're doing and anything is possible."

Pics O' Rama: Episode 3
Before I post the pictures. I'll give an update on the forum. It should return anytime. I'll contact my host and see if I can get a return time. Also, the spelling errors on the forum error page were not typed by me, and I have no control of that. Anyway, I've collected enough pictures for another "Pics O'Rama". You may have seen a few of these before, but I hope at least a few are new. Some of these were easy to get, others took a while. Never-the-less, here they are:

4 Months Later, and News Award
Well, it's four months later but I finally found the complete version of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition photo. I found the full picture and just a close up. Both are posted below. Here's a URL discussing what they did, http://www.velo3.net/makeover.htm. Also, on a small side note. DallasNews.com's Karen Dee Davis, John Banks and Smiley Pool won awards for their work on Carly. So good job to them.

"Change in Routine" Article
I found this new article. It's a few days old but it's still pretty good.

------------------------------------------------

As an Olympic gold medalist, Carly Patterson is still in high demand but she's finally enjoying life as a regular teenager as she contemplates the future.

By KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer
Published June 1, 2005

TAMPA - Carly Patterson stood on the medal stand as the gymnastics all-around champion at last year's Olympic Games in Athens with a gold medal around her neck, a laurel on her head and a smile across her face. As the United States flag went up and the Star-Spangled Banner played, she tried her best to soak it in.

The Athens effort made her famous.

She became the sport's undisputed darling. Ford gave her a new Mustang. Jay Leno and David Letterman secured her as a guest. She was picked to appear on the Wheaties box. She landed her own leotard line.

"It was more than I thought," Patterson said last week at a promotional appearance at Stars Athletics gym.

The Olympic performance, which also included two silver medals (beam, team), signaled the end of one chapter in Patterson's life and the start of another. At 16, she became the first American woman to win the all-around since 1984, but the success presented an interesting challenge. After all, what does one do with her life after she achieves everything she ever wanted - and at such a young age.

Nine months later and now 17, the engaging and well-spoken Patterson, who resides in Allen, Texas, has stepped back a bit from the competitive realm. And for the first time, she is living more like a regular teenager.

The rising high school senior is thinking about college, has made more friends outside the gym and recently recorded a few songs with hopes of launching a singing career. She even has given thought to the idea of becoming a coach.

"After such success Carly was basically swept from her feet by a lot of stuff," said Yevgeny Marchenko, Patterson's longtime coach at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy. "The Olympics took a lot of toll, physically and mentally."

Patterson's medals were the fruition of 10 years on the mat. She began training when she was 61/2 and has produced a resume so distinguished that even had she not won gold, she still would be considered one of the sport's best.

Everything in life was shaped by gymnastics, from her school to her social life. She essentially had "no life" as the sport consumed her, but she insists, "I don't feel like I missed any of my childhood. I did it for so long, it was all I knew. And anyway, I loved it. That was what I wanted to do and that's my choice. I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Make no mistake, though, the road to the top took work. Not to mention drive.

"From the very beginning, I saw the potential," Marchenko said. "She was the most determined girl in the gym and she really took direction well. She would never give up. She was so focused on her sport."

The focus isn't entirely gone.

Patterson still practices under Marchenko's watchful eyes (a recent back injury cost her a few months), but now is in the gym only once a day so she can stay in shape primarily for tours. A decision on whether to shoot for the 2008 Olympics likely will be made within the next year, she said, and what Patterson will do is anyone's guess.

"Not having any life again, that seems hard," Patterson confessed.

Though Marchenko said he doesn't doubt Patterson could return and be successful, he noted, "Look at gymnastics history ... it's very hard after success to motivate yourself again."

For now, Patterson seems to be enjoying life as a celebrity. At Stars Athletics, more than 100 children, mostly young girls, waited in line holding posters and other items so Patterson could autograph them. She glady obliged, then took questions from and showed off some moves.

"I've seen her all the time," said 4-year-old Logan Richardson of Tampa, who wore a shirt with a photo of Patterson on it.

The trip to Tampa is one of many Patterson has made in recent weeks. She has traveled to Indianapolis, San Francisco and Pennsylvania, too. As an Olympic champion, she still is in high demand, and though it has been a bit overwhelming, the routine hasn't gotten old just yet. The fame is one of the things that pushed her to the medal stand.

"Everybody is always very positive and nice, and they seem excited to see me," Patterson said. "It's a good feeling to know you're wanted. I feel like I've achieved everything I wanted to."

Indy 500 Wrap-Up
The Indy 500 wrapped up last weekend. Because of that, a few new Carly things have released. Including two pictures and a quote. They are below.

“I’ve never been to a race or seen anything like this before. This was really cool. I’m already getting offers for the upcoming gig in Dallas. It was really exciting to see. The cars were going so fast, and they were so loud. I’m probably going to pay more attention to racing now.”
