See Carly Back in Action
During this weekend's interview, Carly mentioned she'd be returning for a show this fall. Although I have not confirmed this, it would be a good guess to assume she was referring about the Hilton Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular in Atlanta. Tickets range from $20-$60.

"A whirlwind year for Allen's golden girl" - Article
A new Carly article just came out. It talks about the ESPYs, the back injury, Carly's summer, and 2008. Plus a "Fall Out Boy" crush?

---------------------------------

A whirlwind year for Allen's golden girl

Travel, fanfare haven't eroded enthusiasm of Olympic star Patterson

By CATHY HARASTA / The Dallas Morning News

ALLEN – Natalie Patterson leaned across her kitchen's breakfast bar to point to an ordinary-looking closet. Behind its closed doors, a Herculean task awaits Natalie and her daughter, Carly.

After a year of collecting awards and rubbing shoulders with celebrities, Carly Patterson says she hasn't decided whether to defend her Olympic all-around gymnastics title. Stacks of newspaper and magazine stories have accumulated in the closet since Carly won the Athens Olympics all-around gymnastics title on Aug. 19, 2004. Mother and daughter have been way too busy to organize the clippings into scrapbooks.

Carly, 17, has lived a life saturated with superstars, awards, autograph signings and airports since her golden night in Greece. But the fanfare hasn't eroded her enthusiasm for new adventures. Give her a perfect 10 for avoiding cynicism. Most of her winsome naiveté remains intact, despite her stature in the sports world.

"I didn't even know who he was!" she said, laughing as she perched on a kitchen stool. "But Andy Roddick came up to me and said, 'I haven't seen you since you kicked butt at the Olympics.' "

Before the Games, her years spent in the gym, training six or so hours a day, kept Carly from doing much outside of gymnastics. She went back and forth between her Allen home and the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano, when she wasn't traveling to competitions.

"It's so weird," Carly said. "Last summer, it seemed I'd never get to the Olympics. Life is going by faster now that I'm not in the gym much. I don't have to train at that same intensity."

She will reunite with her Athens Olympic teammates at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Indianapolis this week. But Carly won't defend the national all-around co-championship she shared with Courtney Kupets last year.

Training limited

Carly's travel schedule and a back injury have prevented her from resuming full training since the Athens Olympics, where she won three medals and became the first American woman to capture the all-around championship at a nonboycotted Games.

Her mother said Carly had an upper-back fracture during the Olympics, where she won silver medals for the team event and on the balance beam, in addition to the all-around gold. Carly did not make her pain public knowledge in Athens. She said she relied on the pain-reliever Aleve.

The Patterson: How she does it
Though that injury has healed, Natalie said two bulging disks in Carly's lower back have kept her from her pre-Olympics training routine.

She spent the first three months after the Olympics on a 40-city gymnastics tour. She said she continues to write potential song lyrics in a notebook as she waits to hear from record companies about the music CD she made during the winter.

Carly helped at some of WOGA's summer camps for young gymnasts. Evgeny Marchenko, Carly's coach and an academy co-owner, said she matured and gained valuable coaching experience.

Carly, who was named the U.S. Olympic Committee's 2004 SportsWoman of the Year, also worked to catch up on her studies at Spring Creek Academy in Plano, where she is a senior. Her mother said Carly eventually might attend Collin County Community College or Texas Woman's University in Denton.

Uncertain about 2008

Carly will remain tied to the sport, serving as a spokeswoman for USA Gymnastics through the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"Whatever she chooses to do, I support her," Mr. Marchenko said. "I'm very happy with the way Carly handled herself in the year after becoming the queen of the Olympics. She's still very, very good about her eating habits and staying in shape."

Martha Karolyi, the USA Gymnastics women's national team coordinator, said Carly has the talent to return for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Carly said she hasn't decided about her competitive future.

"It's 50-50," Mr. Marchenko said of her competing in the 2008 Olympics. "If she wants to do it again, I'll be there for her. So far, we're not talking about it. Her schedule is very demanding and crazy.

"I know how hard that girl worked to achieve her dream. It's probably the best dream in the world for any gymnast, to win the Olympic all-around."

Some of Carly's favorite moments of the last year involved her charity work. At the Red Dress fashion show, a benefit for heart disease, she pictured herself taking an unscheduled dismount from the runway.

"The dress I was wearing was really long," she said. "The hem got caught on the beaded shoes. I was walking on the dress itself, afraid I would trip. Then, there was a really tall model posed at the end of the runway. She was kind of an old model, wearing a cape. I didn't know I was standing on her cape until she went to move forward and my feet pulled her back."

Then, Carly found out another model, singing star Sheryl Crow, also came close to tripping.

"I didn't feel so bad," Carly said.

The royal treatment

Natalie said she has been impressed with how well she and Carly have been treated.

"It still is kind of surreal," said Natalie, a nurse. "This has probably been the fastest year of my life."

Natalie, Carly, WOGA gymnast Nastia Liukin and her mother, Anna, took a three-day vacation to Cozumel, Mexico, in late May. Carly said the trip provided a rare chance to relax. Appearances at youth gymnastics camps around the country and on behalf of her business partners, including Wheaties and the American Dental Association, keep her on a tight schedule.

The camp counselors at a Wisconsin gymnastics session last month made her feel like a kid again. Or maybe like the kid she didn't have time to be when other kids were pulling time-honored stunts on each other.

"They wanted to hang out with me and take me snipe hunting," Carly said as her eyes glowed at the memory. "I'd never heard of it. I pictured myself running and swooping up birds. They told me to take a flashlight and make a clucking noise with my tongue and then see how many I could catch in a bag. I sat there for about thirty minutes clucking, going ' Cluck! Cluck! Cluck!' Then I said, 'I kind of don't think this is real.' "

She laughed again at the joke, old but new to her. Then she smiled at its meaning. It signified that Carly was one of them, heck, one of the vast group of people who have been tricked into snipe hunting.

The year since her magical summer night in Athens has lived up to her expectations, with one exception.

"I'd really like to meet Pete from the band Fall Out Boy," Carly said. "But really, the best part of the year was that I really loved, well, feeling loved by everyone."

IG Interviews Carly
I've been gone so this interview is a few days old. Anyway, here is a recent interview with Carly which includes Carly discussing her future.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Since winning the all-around gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, 17-year-old Carly Patterson of the United States has been in a steady spotlight outside the world of competitive gymnastics. Patterson's post-Olympic agenda has been filled with talk shows, awards ceremonies, celebrity events and promotions. She is recording a pop album in New York City, and is anticipating the year-end release of her autobiography.

Although Patterson has been performing in gymnastics exhibitions and making appearances at gymnastics-related events, she has not competed since the Athens Games. She still represents World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano, Texas. Patterson plans to attend the 2005 U.S. Championships (August 10-13 in Indianapolis), but not to defend the all-around title she shared last year.

IG caught up with Patterson the first week of August to hear her expectations for the 2005 U.S. Championships and her hopes for the future.

IG: What will you be doing at the U.S. Championships?

CP: The Olympic team will be doing some meet-and-greet autograph sessions. I will be meeting Sheila Frasier from the Indiana Make-A-Wish Foundation. She once did gymnastics, but because of her illness she had to give it up. She asked if she could meet me. USA Gymnastics will be giving her tickets to all sessions, as well.

IG: What predictions can you make about the competition? Which girls seem strongest to you?

CP: I feel like Nastia (Liukin) will do really well, because she always does. Actually, I'm anxious to see everyone compete and what the outcome will be. I think Alicia (Sacramone) and Chellsie (Memmel) will be strong competitors, too.

IG: How have you been helping Nastia prepare for her first senior championships, knowing that you went through that transition yourself?

CP: I think Nastia already knows how to compete at a high level, because she has lots of great experience. I know it will be different for her to compete alone from WOGA, but I told her she will do great. I said, "Just have fun and do what you always do." We are great friends, and I always want to be there to support her in everything!

IG: What plans do you have to compete in the rest of 2005, and 2006?

CP: I am not going to be competing in 2005 for sure, due to my travel schedule and back problems. I have a couple of bulging disks in my back that I am trying to heal, but it is taking a while. I am working with a trainer to strengthen different muscles, doing acupuncture and working with a chiropractor. I'm taking it one day at a time right now, and trying to enjoy where I'm at. I will re-evaluate my goals for 2006 when the time comes.

IG: Outside of the gym, what have you been working on lately?

CP: I'm working with GymKin (leotards) and will be for the next year. They are awesome and very fun to work with. I will be doing an ice skating and gymnastics show (in Atlanta) that will be televised in October. I also did a small piece in the movie "Stick It."

And, of course, I'm working on my CD - which I love and I'm so excited about! I have been working with Wheaties, Tyson Chicken, Visa and American Dental Association. My authorized book will be coming out at the end of the year. It's been so much fun because I have worked at some camps this summer: WOGA, Flip Fest, Lake Owens, and U.S. Gymnastics Training Center.

Life has continued to be so busy. I could probably go on and on. It has been a great experience and I have had a blast this last year!

Carly out for Worlds, Beijing Next?
Martha Karolyi told Dallas News last night that Carly is officially out for Worlds. The reason Carly can't make it to worlds is a back ailment. However, there's another hint that Carly might go for Beijing. "There is always time, as young and as talented an athlete as she is, to come back," Karolyi said.

I normally don't post every new Carly picture I find but I really like this one. I edited it and took out all the other people in the picture and just made the background black. It's probably one of my favorite Carly pictures.
