Carly on Radio, Sings "Lost in Me"
Carly got up early this morning for a radio interview with Dallas' MIX 102.9. Also there, was local NBC 5 doing a report on Carly. She sang a clip of "Lost in Me" which I talked about a few posts ago. I have the audio clip and a couple videos.

Carly's First Music Review:

FORT WORTH, Texas -- I believe I detected a collective groan rolling across North Texas when word got out that Olympic Gold Medalist Carly Patterson was pursuing a singing career.

Quite frankly, you can't blame the public-at-large for being leery.

We've seen our share of would-be actors, comedians and athletes who, once they hit it big, went screaming into the recording studio like a wailing banshee and actually expected people to buy that garbage (Eddie Murphy and Don Johnson come to mind).

But I honestly believe Carly has a good shot of achieving some success in the music biz. She certainly has the poise and confidence to handle the rigors of such a gig (she stood on the world stage with grace and class during the '04 summer games).

In my opinion Thursday's a cappella debut on Mix 102.9 showed us a girl with great vocal potential and a true knack for writing heartfelt lyrics. Nobody so much as blew a harmonica to get her to pitch and she sang in key with a true flash of soul-fullness and emotion.

Listen, I've stood on the stage on open mic night with a guitar in hand and nothing between me and the audience but a flying beer bottle.

It's not easy to do and she did it well. Plus, having Ashlee and Jessica Simpson's dad to push her career along simply means she won't have to suffer the wrath of Simon Cowell as she develops her chops.

So, break-a-leg Carly and knock 'em dead girl.

Tooth Fairy Ball Pictures
We have some fresh pictures from Friday night's "Tooth Fairy Ball". It appears the entire Patterson Posse was there and since this was on Friday night, probably explains why she was not at the American Cup.

Carly Leads the "Tooth Fairy Foundation"
Carly is continuing her work in the dental field. Carly will be active in the first annual "An Enchanted Evening with the Tooth Fairy". The event will be held in the Marriott-Legacy Town Center in Plano. The event will be held March 3 at 7PM. A silent auction will be held and several Carly collectibles will be up for a bids. If you can make it (and you have money), you might be able to get some great Carly stuff. Carly said she got involved because dentistry fascinates her. She plans to major in dentistry while in college. "They shouldn't have to worry about toothaches or their teeth hurting," Carly said. "There are more things to worry about than your teeth hurting," she added.

Radio Interview
Yesterday, Carly did some press for the upcoming American Cup. She stopped by a local radio station and was on the local CBS affiliate's Morning Show. I don't have the TV interview, but was able to get the radio interview. She answers two very important questions by Carly fans. Her current relationship status and her future in Gymnastics. wink

I Guess Everyone Knows Now, and CPOV
Over the weekend, 31 articles about Carly's moving to singing were posted in various papers big and small. From the Sioux City Journal to MSNBC and Sports Illustrated. So it would appear everyone is hearing of Carly's new career. See the Articles.

Also, CPOV (CarlyPattersonVideos.com) is back up. After costing me almost half a grand last month. I decided to move it to a better server. If you want to help me try to recover from last month's bandwidth bills, please click "Donate" at the top of this page. I'm thinking of creating a "Members Only" type area as a bonus for those who donate. After it's created, I'll contact those who have donated.

I'm in the process of getting a bunch of information about Carly's upcoming book together. I'll be adding a page to the site about it and a newsletter should be in your inbox about it this week.

Career flip: Carly working on a CD
Olympian has Simpsons' father on her team as she works on demo CD

10:14 PM CST on Friday, February 3, 2006
By LINDA STEWART BALL / The Dallas Morning News

ALLEN Olympic gold medalist Carly Patterson is not a kid anymore.

The champion gymnast turns 18 today, and she's working to launch her grown-up self in a new, upbeat direction.

Though she's not officially announcing her retirement, this professional athlete wants to be a pop singer.

That's risky, given the public's perception of who she is the coolly confident kid who catapulted to fame as the first American female to win the all-around title since Mary Lou Retton in 1984.

"People only know me as being a gymnast," Carly said. "It's kind of scary."

But Carly's used to difficult dismounts, adept at nailing blind, backward jumps into the unknown.

She hopes people will let her leap from gold medals to gold records with her signature precision and poise.

Carly hasn't hired a voice coach or recorded an album yet, but she's got at least one big name in her corner.

Joe Simpson, father and manager of Richardson-raised pop singers Ashlee and Jessica Simpson, is trying to develop her singing career.

"I think she's got great potential," said Mr. Simpson, of Papa Joe Records in Los Angeles. "I'm the kind of guy that likes to do things out of the box. ... Carly presents an exciting opportunity."

Given her "built-in audience," he said, they're trying to match her music to that solid base. They're searching for the right songs to record on a demo CD.
"She's a girl who has already won the hearts of millions of people around the world. She's already shown that she has the ability to do the impossible. That's a lot of what our business is all about."

Transformation

Carly hopes her fans will support this transformation and accept her physical metamorphosis, too.

She's grown taller and her body has changed so much in the past year that she sometimes feels like she's incognito.

Though her appearance has changed, deep down she's still the same determined, gutsy girl who aims high and intends to land firmly on both feet.

Product endorsements aside, Carly is not much different from other teenage girls.

She's dating. But because boys her age are way "too clingy," Carly said, she prefers older men. You know, ages 19 or 20.

Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff and Kelly Clarkson are among her musical idols. Her iPod is full of her favorite rock and alternative bands. She sings along with the best of them in her car, in her bedroom, throughout her Allen home.

At 18, she's an Olympian, author and, soon, singer. But unlike other teenagers, Carly has the name, the contacts and an Olympian's single-mindedness. Those who know her say they're not surprised by this new career goal.

Singing the anthem

She's always loved to sing, but her rigorous, seven-hour-a-day workout schedule left little time to reach musical high notes.

Now, the young woman who performed amazing athletic feats before the world is trying to overcome her fear of doing something new in front of a crowd.

She mustered the courage to publicly perform one of the toughest songs around "The Star-Spangled Banner" for the 2006 World Olympic Gymnastics Academy Classic in Collin County last month.

"It was like a big step for me to do that," she said of her national anthem performance. "Now I know that I can."

'Nothing can stop her'

Naturally, there were some critics, but she received an overwhelmingly positive response.

"Nobody booed," she said, chuckling with a twinge of still-lingering relief.

"We were excited," said Evgeny Marchenko, Carly's coach and WOGA's co-owner. "It was an opportunity for the fans and people who love Carly to see her different side."

He said girls cannot be gymnasts forever. There's a limited window in which you can express yourself and achieve your best which she's done. So he's pleased that Carly's found another passion, one she can pursue for many years to come.

"If Carly loves something, she'll give 100 percent," Mr. Marchenko said. "That's what made Carly the best gymnast on the planet. She works very, very hard. When she's determined, nothing can stop her."Several steadfast devotees say they can't wait for her CD to come out, which could be sometime next year.

First, the book

In the meantime, Carly is releasing an autobiography, Carly Patterson: Be Strong. Written with Clint Kelly, it's published by Positively For Kids Inc., a company based in Kirkland, Wash.

The 48-page inspirational believe-in-yourself hardback is told in Carly's words and aimed at children ages 9 to 14. It is scheduled for release online at www.positivelyforkids.com on April 1 and later in bookstores.

Be Strong begins with Carly's training path to the Olympics. It ends with her signing a contract to record her demo music CD.

Carly's mom, Natalie Patterson, said her oldest daughter has always been driven, she's just redirecting her energy into the music scene. As a parent, she has mixed emotions.

"I'm concerned about that world," Ms. Patterson said. "We don't want to be taken in and turned into something that's really not Carly."

But because Carly is "grounded and humble" and has the support of family and close friends, she's fairly certain she'll be able to handle the craziness and hectic pace of being a pop star on tour, should it come to that.

"She has grown up," Ms. Patterson said.

And with that maturity comes a certain amount of practical wisdom.

If the singing career doesn't take off, the young woman with a winning smile says she can always be a dental hygienist.

Classes at Collin County Community College are probably in her future after she graduates from Spring Creek Academy in Plano this spring.

"Of course, I'll never turn my back on gymnastics or not be involved in some way," Carly said. "Gymnastics is what got me here. ... But I'm not going to be the 16-year-old little Olympic gymnast for the rest of my life.

"Give me a chance to prove myself in singing, too. If you don't like me, fine. I don't care," she said, with a slightly nervous laugh.
